Our operation as a whole is measured annually for total carbon emissions we emit and we challenge ourselves to reduce these wherever possible year on year. Our factory at Thorganby near York is 70% lit by LED lighting, we select a zero landfill waste contractor and use accredited suppliers and contractors with similar values and low carbon transport solutions.
At Hartleys we have a joined up water strategy and are successfully reducing the daily quantities of effluent produced through our ongoing recirculation and water recycling plan whilst treating waste water in our state of the art biological Effluent plant. We also use low impact deployment methods on local fields to add digestate and effluent sludge to improve the soil fertility.
We are very focused on our energy procurement having invested in 180KW of solar PV and an on-site AD plant which uses waste vegetables & locally grown maize to produce 25% of our electricity that has continually powered our cold-storage since 2014. The heat we produce goes back into our blanching and cleaning processes. All our residual energy requirement is sought from green energy providers’’.
Our farming company follows a regenerative cropping regime which is improving our soil vitality. We also aim to protect and improve the flora and fauna having created wetland scrapes, invested in river protection schemes and planting thousands of trees to absorb water run-off. We have 2km of hedge laying in the pipeline for 2023-24.
