It wouldn’t be a normal week in the J E Hartley office without a certain MD asking his staff to find a way to process a new variety of vegetable. So, when a customer asked if we could produce IQF British organic butternut squash to their strict technical specification, we rose to the challenge!
If you’ve ever tried to prep a butternut at home you’ll know just how tricky it can be so we designed a special table to hold and slice it as well as a metal scoop to remove the seeds, click on the video to see the equipment in action. Everything was then peeled, diced into 10 mm cubes, blanched and frozen allowing us to offer the first IQF British organic butternut squash to our customers.
The organic squash was grown especially for us on the black peat soil of Cambridgeshire by Clive Martin of Holmselect. Clive’s family has been farming on the Fens for three generations and this year we’ve got our eyes on some of the other organic produce that he can grow – just don’t ask us how we’re going process it yet!
